Werewolves of London
If I had to pick a thing that I love most in the world, it would be music. Life without music would NOT be good! To me, the epitome of tragedy is a musician who goes deaf.
I’ve been listening to a lot of music lately because of hours of driving – back and forth to Brisbane (a good 4 hour trip by car, one way). I would go a bit stir crazy if I couldn’t listen to music in the car.
Well anyway, on my last trip I pulled out Warren Zevon’s Excitable Boy. The lyrics to Werewolves of London get me every time. The beginning of the song with
‘I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand …’
uses that classic technique of juxtaposing two unlikely subjects to make you sit up in surprise.
and the second last line:
‘I saw a werewolf drinking a piña colada at Trader Vic’s
His hair was perfect‘.
The song is not really about werewolves is it. Gotta love an extended metaphor.
Have a listen.
As far as I’m concerned there is not a bad song (well maybe one is not as brilliant as the rest) on this album.
I must admit that I have never really listen to the words to this song…thanks for the cue.
no problemo slpmartin
One of my fave musos. Very sad to see him depart. I discovered him via my love affair with Joe Walsh. Thanks for the memory Gabrielle.
you have good taste Brad – haha.
I am right with you on this Gabe… such an underrated singer/songwriter.
yes, he was underrated – thanks Graham.
It’s funny you should talk about this because I had a very bad bout of the blues last week and it was music that pulled me out of it. I listened to my holy musical trinity – Mozart, Coltrane and Hendrix. Such brilliance always restores me.
For dessert I listened to some 1940s bottleneck blues. Those guys sure could fingerpick. Stripped down and raw – it is the stuff of life!
wonderful stuff Selma and the best way to change a mood 😉
Such a great song … can’t help but get caught up in it whenever I hear it.
it is, but not the best on the album imo 🙂
I didn’t delve any deeper – just took it on superficial value & put it down to a legacy of the rock life………brain pickled by hallucagenics ( ? spelling )
To be honest, I hadn’t thought about it much Jane and then I heard the lead singer from Powderfinger talking about it (as his favourite song)and I suddenly got it!
LOVE that song lol! I feel that way about music too. I walk and when I walk I plug in my mp3 player. Aside from writing it is my biggest stress relief.
It is a great stress relief. Thanks Dee for the info on widgets – I think I’ll leave it this time (maybe my columns are too narrow) – I’ve done them before with no problems but this time – blah!
wicked cool song, havent heard it for a long time, thanks for the gifty, so full with imagery
your welcome tipota 🙂
OO! I LOVE this song! Interesting to find that it is one of your favorites.
It’s that wolf thing again 47whitebuffalo – haha – glad you love it too.
Reblogged this on Gabrielle Bryden's Blog and commented:
Reblogging just because it’s a Sunday and I love this song 😎
Quirky!
😊
A true classic. Owwoooooooooh!
hehehehe you do a good werewolf impersonation Selma 😁
Man I love that song and howling along with it. Every time I hear that annoying Kid Rock song that stole its tune I get mad because for a moment I think it’s Werewolves of London then it’s not 😦
Same here – such an annoying rip off of a riff 😩
