Warren Zevon ‘Werewolves of London’

Werewolves of London

Warren Zevon 'Excitable Boy'

If I had to pick a thing that I love most in the world, it would be music. Life without music would NOT be good! To me, the epitome of tragedy is a musician who goes deaf.

I’ve been listening to a lot of music lately because of hours of driving – back and forth to Brisbane (a good 4 hour trip by car, one way).  I would go a bit stir crazy if I couldn’t listen to music in the car.

Well anyway, on my last trip I pulled out Warren Zevon’s Excitable Boy. The lyrics to Werewolves of London get me every time. The beginning of the song with

I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand …’

uses that classic technique of juxtaposing two unlikely subjects to make you sit up in surprise.

and the second last line:

I saw a werewolf drinking a piña colada at Trader Vic’s
His hair was perfect‘.

The song is not really about werewolves is it. Gotta love an extended metaphor.

Have a listen.

As far as I’m concerned there is not a bad song (well maybe one is not as brilliant as the rest) on this album.

  1. It’s funny you should talk about this because I had a very bad bout of the blues last week and it was music that pulled me out of it. I listened to my holy musical trinity – Mozart, Coltrane and Hendrix. Such brilliance always restores me.

For dessert I listened to some 1940s bottleneck blues. Those guys sure could fingerpick. Stripped down and raw – it is the stuff of life!

  2. I didn’t delve any deeper – just took it on superficial value & put it down to a legacy of the rock life………brain pickled by hallucagenics ( ? spelling )

  3. LOVE that song lol! I feel that way about music too. I walk and when I walk I plug in my mp3 player. Aside from writing it is my biggest stress relief.

    • It is a great stress relief. Thanks Dee for the info on widgets – I think I’ll leave it this time (maybe my columns are too narrow) – I’ve done them before with no problems but this time – blah!

  4. Man I love that song and howling along with it. Every time I hear that annoying Kid Rock song that stole its tune I get mad because for a moment I think it’s Werewolves of London then it’s not 😦
