Australian Masked Lapwing (Plover)
quick steps, quick steps
masked lapwings two, in concert brisk
like law lords at court, in deep
conversation, natter, natter, natter
whatโs the matter?
guilty I say
what say you?
natter, natter, natter,
parading grandeur,
doubly resplendent, in feathered robes,
the legal garb,
with hands clasped, in arrears
handcuffed,
dress pinned, perhaps
busy day, busy day
must be on our quick step way
kak, kak
kak, kak, kak

For Selma in the City ๐ – we talked about the plover legal fraternity some years ago (finally I got around to writing the poem).
I’ll look at our lapwings differently from now on!

thanks Juliet – they are fascinating birds, though a little scary when they are protecting a nest or a chick
Charming!
thanks Michele ๐
Hi Gabrielle … love your poem (I have a special place in my hearts for plovers … such interesting birds), and I have missed your blog. Yes it seems I’m back from hiatus again, but with me you never quite know how long this will last. Haha. ๐
well hello Tracey ๐ what a pleasant surprise – good to see you again and thanks for your kind words.
hehe – unlike the crow, they are rather bird-brained, tho’, always standing in the middle of the road (although their metaphorical equivalent here could arguably be said to be birdbrained, too ;-))
Hahaha too true ๐ thanks bb
