That is the only downside of having a dog. We become attached but they age quicker than we do. My sympathy to you, the bloke and the kids.

Sympathy! That is always so hard to take.
Often the best solution is to find one of the sad dogs who has lost a home, and build a new sort of companionship. They are all different, I have found.
