On the radio this Saturday (Birdland)

On the radio this Saturday (Birdland)

This Saturday, 19th March 2011, at 2pm on ABC Radio National (360 documentaries) the Birdland project, directed by Gretchen Miller, will be broadcast.

Two of my poems Skin Deep and Why do we hate the crow? have been recorded as part of this fantastic, collaborative project (using the voices of actors and musical accompaniment).

The project began on the ABC POOL website and the callout was for ‘celebratory, thoughtful, descriptive, creative works that celebrate the human/avian relationship.’ As my regular readers would know, I love birds and just had to toss my hat in the ring. The list of finalists can be found here.

You can read more about this project on the POOL website or you can download the broadcast from the 360 documentaries website, from the 19th March 2011.

I can’t wait to listen to the broadcast (I think my poems sound much better when someone else is reading them out – haha).

Ps. I found out the birdlands project is broken up into separate components, and my two poems will be in a later broadcast – I will advise of new dates when they find out (sorry about that dudes 🙂 )

  1. Congratulations, Gabrielle!

I love both of your pieces, the first, Skin Deep, because it shows just how shallow people are, judging by colours and appearance. The second poem, Why do we hate the Crow – I love the poem, but don’t agree with the sentiments expressed at all. I love crows in all their arrogance and self assurance – sorry…

    1. Thanks adeeyoyo. The poem ‘why do we hate the crow’ is not meant to represent my voice – it is the colloquial voice of the people (Gretchen says I do a good yob impersonation – haha – that would be ‘yobbo’ – you can google that) – I love crows – all birds in fact, but can relate to the fear of death factor that they sometimes bring out in people.

  2. Whoohoo! *Applause* 🙂 Congratulations and although I’m biased because I think you are spectacular, they couldn’t have chosen a better poet than you Ms.B.

  3. You do deserve a wider audience and there are few wider than RN! It’s in the electronic diary!
Did you backflip on the crow? I did about fifty years ago at the same time I developed sympathy for (individual) rats… stop laughing; I’m serious!

  4. Congratulations! This is great news, for you, for us, for bird lovers, and for birds everywhere! Hurray!

(Have you tweeted this news?) (Sorry, couldn’t help myself.)

  5. NOTE: I made a mistake with the date my poems go to air – the birdlands project is broken up into separate components (so mine wasn’t on the Saturday program). I listened to the broadcast and it was fantastic, but slightly depressing with some detailing of how bird numbers are reducing around the world – we are so stuffing up this wonderful planet – anyway, I will find out soon about the new dates for broadcast.
